So a while ago, Scott and I visited Trelissick Garden’s with our shiny new National Trust cards. We’ve visited the area before and done the walk down to the beach and along by the King Harry ferry which is very beautiful, but this was our first time in the gardens.

Trelissick

The gardens near Feock in Truro have been under ownership of the National Trust since 1955. Famous for its many species of rhododendron, azalea and hydrangeas which flower during the spring and summer.

The house and gardens were originally started in 1750 by John Lawrence. The Daniell family then bought the estate in the 1800’s, continuing to develop the house and gardens. Mr Daniell then went bankrupt and the estate was passed onto the Boscowen family, before going to the Davies-Gilbert family.

Trelissick

In 1918 the estate was bought by Leonard Dareham Cuncliffe, a banker who lived there until his death in 1937.The estate then went to his stepdaughter, Ida Copeland, who used it as a summer house until its donation to the National Trust in 1955.

Most of the house was retained by the family who continue to live there, with a small section of the house recently being opened to the public.

Glendurgan is a subtropical garden found in a deep valley off the Helford river.

We visited this green oasis back in June of 2017 a typically Cornish summer day (overcast and mizzly).

Going in June we missed the magnolia’s and camellia’s flowering, but this doesn’t stop it being an impressive place to visit with a wide variety of rare plants and shrubs. To see some photos of the spring flowers check out this post. 

The centre of the garden hosts a cherry laurel maze, planted in 1933, with it’s little hut in the middle. The garden itself was first started in 1920 by Alfred Fox, who planted many of the original trees.

Glendurgan

We had a mooch around on the beach before heading back up to the maze and giving that a go. It’s a lot longer and harder than it looks from the outside!

Durgan Beach

We took the top path that leads to a platform that gives a fantastic view of the maze, before following the path down to the hamlet of Durgan. Despite the weather this was a great place to visit, with plenty of green space to get lost in.
